Five minute color sketch of my dad :)

I was in Virginia and Montana and felt totally like there was nothing decent to put up. I guess that is unfortunately always the case for me.

There are two projects I want to start on; junior project and my jewelry box.

I got a box for Christmas, a big behemoth wall-hanging monster of a jewelry box and this works out for me because I have a shit ton of jewelry. A shit ton, no exaggeration. But it's just standard black. I thought it needed some help, so I've been decoupaging book pages onto it (Yuki mentioned decoupage at some point in the last year and explained how to do it--good god, I even remembered for this project!) There's a front piece ostensibly for photographs of family/friends/pets/celebrity idols but I suppose I'll come up with some art and make it into a sequential piece.

The junior project I've had a lot of ideas for. One of them I keep coming back to--kind of like one of the short novelty of film sort of things done in 1910~. This may just be a result of reading too much 1880-1916 social drama, which has been the bulk of my reading lately. I swear I'll finish the Wheel of Time. Someday.

Sketches done at the airports in Chicago and DC. The guy on the upper right was an O'Hare employee and basically stood in the exact same position with his glasses on his forehead for an hour, answering all the silly questions of every customer he came across.

These are designs for a new character. The design on her jacket is perhaps some sort of stylized R (her name is "Ranni"). I really like that purse/fanny pack thing she has going on for whatever reason. I can't decide on her protective eyewear, however.

BEHOLD

6 years ago, dug up from the darkest recesses of under the stairs.

Believe it or not, there is an even older image of these characters, hiding somewhere. (I kind of want to find it.) This was a "progress drawing" of an older drawing before hand and since I found it today, I drew another.

The lady's name is Jsanque, and the bird is named Flann. (Not a pastry.) Jsanque was some sort of Alexander the Great type, and her husband is a shapeshifter type who vastly prefers his bird form. Note that I could not draw men at 14.

Mama sometimes likes to pretend that she has time for homemaking and so she made a chicken last night for the dinner instead of buying one from Fred Meyer.

Today she let the glass dish soak on the counter and I forgot about it.

I was reaching over to see if we had any rolled oats so I could make a pastry that I have a particular craving for (yes I am guilty of this homemaking thing too except my delusion is that I'm good at it) and my hair decides to take a stroll in the chicken water.

I smell like chicken now.

Not much going on! Plus I can never seem to dedicate any time to scanning or anything.

Exalted is going along fine! My necrosurgeon has her finalized design at last. The one problem is that her imagination is much better than mine and I don't always have a plan for every dead body I meet. Anyway, here is a drawing:

She even has a little backstory, I think. So far, I think that she used to be a kindly nurse/nun thing that worked in an orphan hospital until her pseudodeath, at the hands of an older charge (say fourteen or fifteen), who managed to push her down a well. Clearly there is a little more, especially regarding the transition from sweet caregiver to merciless Deathknight and necrotechnician.

I spent an obscene amount of time in a government facility waiting for my turn to be told that I was not in possession of all the necessary information please have a booklet containing the information YOU needed when you WALKED IN but whatever good luck next time. I felt like this dude:

There were all sorts of people who brought their children who were bored the fuck out of their skulls; in order for their little child muscles to escape the atrophy that sets in if any kid under six holds still for more than fifteen minutes, they had to set up loud, obnoxious games of tag in the waiting area while their mothers complained in Spanish.

Needless to say, the younger ladies were not pleased.

The old dude in front of me did not care.

The good news is that afterward I got to go to B & N and there was this badass Arthur Rackham dover book, badass I say, and I noticed that he really likes the ladies with the off-the-shoulder nightie going. Doodled similar in the Starbucks fancy pants restaurant (fuuuuuck spinach and feta pretzel who the fuck is in charge of this brilliance omg and etc.)

Looks like something Peter Pan like.

Then some older stuff: my character for Exalted, Guiding Hand of the Risen Dead. Risen for short. She's a crazed scientist with a serious fascination with the human body.

Aaaaaand some other characters. Let's not talk about it.

There is something really hard to pinpoint about why I think this is a weird drawing but whatever.

Lol no post until now? What? I guess no scanner and no finished digital art; I'd feel better about putting up digital sketches if they weren't so rough, I guess. No school stuff at all! Wow!

This is what I'm working on now, just a fun pink portrait of a super hero sidekick.

One day there will be something behind her and in that gaping empty headspace like a graphic or words or a texture or something. I love pink so much I swear I never made it past 7-year-old mentality. Oh Lisa Frank I never stopped loving you.

At some point I got sick of looking at it and gave up. Lol. I look at it now, however, and realize while his teeth are all individual hers are two white lines and a shadow . . . imagine that.

Last one of some little goblin. She lives in a room full of windows and is paid to find people + things, as well as witness ceremonies that other goblins want to be binding. Her name is Watcher. Honestly the best thing about her is the room full of windows, not featured in this clip.

More of these two. I redesigned her dress to suit the 1930s, I'm thinking 1935 roughly; J'ai Deux Amours was recorded in 1931, did you know that? I always thought it was from the fifties. Anyway, this woman, Adeline Mennier, is from Canada anyway . . . her stage name is something more palatable, like Addie Mann or something. Her daughter, Pauline, is better known as Puff to the stage hands and the band.

I like the nickname "Puff," like just a pet name that her mother came up with? Or maybe her first word? Or like Jigglypuff, lol I don't know. Puff and her mom have a complicated relationship. Before she was born her mom was some sort of dancer who got knocked up . . . I guess she made it bigger as a singer than a dancer, but I think it was more a career choice made out of necessity. Puff might grate on her, especially when she's being a brat. But still they are quite accustomed to each other.

If I had to assign them a story it would probably follow a similar plot line to all those changeling stories, a la Labyrinth or Hat Full of Sky or that one book I read as a kid where there was this ice thing and the pictures were fucking rad. Except Puff is sort of a "straight man" character, and she'd probably be quite fine on her own (despite being five).

End on the Villainous Triad. Lol Xonck got fucking gypped in the setup he's just about hidden.

Okay okay school stuff to start

Just a bunch of cafe drawings, nothing special. At Macrina nobody would pose interestingly, so I just made up poses. Here they are like in an illustration, I guess?

If I had to make up a story I would say that it would be a rescue story, about the kid trying to save his mom and baby sister with the help of a private investigator and a retired boxing champ.

This other stuff is actually also school work, MAYBE. I think I've decided on my character for junior year. She's a little meringue cookie raincoat child.

That dude is not her dad, by the way, though that is her mother. I just drew him in to see what her dad might look like and lol he is not it.

Her mom is some kind of singer, I guess? She's left on her own a lot and loves her umbrella. I think she's about five or six.

More of Sweetheart (her technical superhero name) in her more final costume style thingy? And a super terrible drawing of Edie for size comparison, her sidekick is tall. I'm thinking that maybe they have a difference in action styles, with Edie being more free-flowing parkour and Maria L being more masculine power punching shit (although notice how they are always bowlegged, why?) I think I'm going to de-bow her legs for the next round.

Why green hair . . . ? I guess for the fun of it . . . ? Also, embarrassing slow workflow revealed. It's supposed to be a tarot card she's holding, and eventually it might even become The Fool. I'm pretty sure she goes with the interpretation that the Major Arcana is the journey of the Fool to, um, enlightenment. Also, I have a feeling that this is another color-retarded character. I will resist the urge next time and do a perfectly color-coordinated classy male figure; unfortunately he'll probably lavender or robin egg blue coordinated, the rate I'm going.

They're supposed to be twins who grew up to be opposites but still like the same things (symbolized by the red? I dunno, I just like that color a lot.) Again, embarrassing workflow revealed! One day, these blobs of color will in fact become people!

I find when I paint stuff randomly a story sort of assigns itself to the picture anyway.

I think she is my favorite villain in not just the book, but in a long, long time. Again, I'm really kind of curious about her motivations and also glad not to know . . . ? D'Orkancz and Xonck had great James Bond type motivations, so her ambiguity is crazy cool compared to those, it makes me think that she had an even better James Bond reason for being in the Cabal with the others.

And to top it off a color sketch of Edie in costume. Wtf that wig is ridiculous, I need to curb my terrible wig fetish a little for reality's sake.

I haven't really posted anything of this woman being ridiculous. Also featured: her normal boring life as a waitress.

I watched all of Pohadka o Honzikovi a Marence, and while I don't necessarily need to understand what they are saying (and also I thought Honzikovi was a silent character until he started chewing out the fairy people.) And while I don't know how to say Marence's name I do know how to say Honzikovi because Marence screams it several times with echo. I don't know how badly I want to see the Krabat tale. I hear it's supposed to be like Harry Potter except Dumbledore is Satan.

First Real Post

Yeah, so no icon, no layout fanciness or anything yet, but sketches and things. Let's start out with what I'm supposed to be working on, which is a classy 1860s Japanese cable car, if, you know, Tokyo had put in cable cars in the 1860s.

It seats a grand total of nine, including the attendant who takes the money and pulls the cord to make the driver (leading the team of horses, probably three or four on popular lines) stop at all the stops. It doesn't go backwards without switching the lines so a driver who doesn't stop in time for the platform probably won't be a driver for long.

This is what I'm actually drawing more of:

She's a super herooooo! Fuck, I'm such a geek. I think she might be just an excuse to draw foreshortened marvel poses (not pictured). She also has a foil, and it's fun to draw them just pounding each other into concrete.

You can see where the guy, Quick, had a knife or some sort of counterweapon to her bat, plus the chick, Edie, was also a bit taller/he was bit shorter. Edie's design has kind of shrunk since the initial drawing (also a bit skinnier). I think the refined drawing doesn't show off her left hand as the initial where I think it was, I dunno, prettier? But at least her right arm isn't (as) broken. The foreshortening on her raised foot isn't as pronounced and it looks . . . too small? Not forward enough. And sadly, like a lot of my refined stuff, it looks awkwardly stiffer than the original doodle.

This is the first time I've had to consider how the damn wig she wears stays on. And to end:

(I haven't read this book in ages, but I just found out there's a sequel, a real sequel and not this misleading volume 2/the 800 page original got split up by the still-hopeful publishers shit. I don't remember if Chang has the hat or if Svenson actually wears a pince-nez, but these are the images that stuck in my head when I imagine this book. All I seriously remember is that Miss Temple rocks the sausage curls and they spend all their time together arguing about what to do next. Oh god steampunk.)
